Volunteering in the Community

Volunteering in the Community allows pupils the opportunity to get real, hands on experience as part of a team involved in supporting the school and members and groups of the Meldrum Community.  Pupils will be invited to consider this course, as it is heavily supported and works best with small numbers of pupils due to the active nature of the work and the practical tasks we will be doing.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?

This course will be helpful for those pupils who enjoy practical learning activities, and don’t mind being outside in all weathers!  Working with a small group, you will develop your interpersonal skills through meeting and conversing with a wide range of the public  and you will also learn how to effectively work as part of a team using skills such as, communication, problem solving, listening, following instructions and working safely will be key areas.

wHAT WILL YOU EXPERIENCE?

Building your skills in communication, team-work and problem solving you’ll be able to experience the sense of achievement that you get through being able to help others.  The Cycling without Age initiative will see you supporting people who are unable to cycle through the use of the community Trishaw ‘Meldrum Meg’.  We will also build our bike maintenance skills by volunteering to perform basic bike checks on staff and pupil bikes, free of charge.  Finally, as the weather changes, we will be offering support to local charity businesses on the run up to Christmas and throughout winter.
